Got to be on the "Brad and Britt" show, on WZTK (web site here: http://www.fmtalk1011.com/default.asp ). Very fun guys, didn't back off on questions, but we had a good time. Several interesting callers, and we were on for nearly an hour, minus the breaks that actually pay the rent.

Citgo Station, off of US 74. Bought some disgusting "Butter Puffs" to try to stay awake, and two large cups of colored dishwater that came out of the coffee machine. Talked to the counter staff (both women) for about 20 minutes, trying to wake up (it was about 12:30 am). Neither of them would believe I was running for Governor. When I told them I was running as a Libertarian, they agreed that THAT was possible. I gave them some cards, and bumper stickers, which they found amusing. They wouldn't sign the petition, saying they weren't registered votes, which I found perfectly believable.

Stopped for the night at the Sleep Inn, in Morganton. A very cheap, new hotel. Perfect for what I needed. Free high speed internet that was actually both free and high speed. Nice. Breakfast was two hardboiled eggs and a bagel. Coffee WAY better than average for the genre. Highly recommended, for $59: Sleep Inn, exit 105 off of I-40, near Morganton.

Emerald Isle: Emerald Isle Mini-Mart, 3300 block of Emerald Drive
Hung out at the Mini-Mart (a very fine Mini-Mart, selling jewelry, many kinds of towels, fishing tackle, bait, and lots of grocery items, as well as beer, wine, bathing suits, and lots of frozen things in boxes….) Asked for signatures, but only got 2 in half an hour of asking. I did have one elderly gentlemen engage me in a spirited debate over capital punishment. He agreed with me that the state is likely to misuse power, and is also likely to get some things wrong. But he insisted that some people just deserve to die (like the old Texas homicide defense: "Sure, I killed him. But he NEEDED killin'.") Gentleman and I agreed to disagree. But he wouldn't sign.

Catawba County, Hickory, State Libertarian Party Convention.
Had dinner, listened to an interesting speech by Matt Mittan (web site here: http://www.mattcave.us/main.html ), and then had a great time at the auction. Guest auctioneer was Tom Bailey, who showed a remarkable flair for entertainment and showmanship. Thanks to Tom, for making that event such a success and raising so much money for the party. Next day got to hear speeches by Dan Imperato (web site here: http://www.daniel2008.com/president ) and Bob Barr (web site here: http://www.bobbarr.org ). I actually got to introduce Bob Barr; a pleasure and an honor. I disagree with him on a lot of things, but he is a big help to the party. And he is right about the issues he cares most about.

Wow, is Murphy ever a pretty little town! I just drove around for nearly 20 minutes. County courthouse, beautiful old brick Methodist Church. Beautiful. Stopped at the Taco Bell and got a drink, talked to two counter workers who were taking their break outside (it was a smashing day out there.) Neither was registered to vote, neither had graduated from high school (they volunteered this, rather proudly). I asked why. One guy said, "There's too much apathy." Then burst out laughing. I laughed, too. That was pretty funny, and unexpected.

Dropping my sons off at the house of some friends, who have a nice house on the river near the Pamlico Sound. Stopped at the Citgo station to gas up, buy some soft drinks, and see if I could get some signatures. Most of the people I talked to were from out of state, so no go. Most of the others claimed they weren't registered. Of course, my bathing suit and flip-flop outfit was not the most professional-looking get-up. Finally got one lady to sign. She said, "I would never vote for you, but you deserve a chance." More than that, I cannot ask. Thanks, ma'am!

Got the new "7-layer crunch wrap"; not very good. Got a chance to ask some questions and talk for a few minutes to the guy behind me in line. The reason is that, being an idiot, I still had on my "State Convention: LPNC!" name sticker on. He was very, VERY interested in drugs. And some Mexican food, fast. Said he was not registered to vote, but he would sign anyway. I told him he should register. He laughed and said he didn't really want "the authorities" to know where he lived. A fine fellow.

Threw an absolute hissy when my son asked for another lid for his drink. Have a nice day, ma'am. Struck up a conversation with an older couple at the next table. They said they couldn't sign the petition, though: "We can't sign things like that; we're Christians." They were very nice about it, though, and (paradoxically or ironically; I couldn't tell) wished me luck getting on the ballot.

Two remarkably attractive young women working there, chatting up all the customers. Many customers are bikers, starting or finishing "The Dragon's Tail" ride on 129. The Mystic has lots of stickers and souvenirs. I talked to some of the bikers, about helmet laws. To a man, they pledged their votes to me, if they ever registered. One openly admitted that it would be hard for him to register, because of (a) felony convictions, (b) outstanding warrants for his arrest, and (c) child support people looking for what county he lived it. I think he was kidding. I *think* he was kidding. About the warrants, anyway.

After turning off of I-26, heading south, I got on US 25. I hadn’t had time to stop for lunch before doing the TV appearance in Asheville, so I pulled into big Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. Lots of folks. I got the buffet, and probably ate two whole chickens. Struck up a conversation with the people at the table next to me. When they found out I was a political scientist from Duke, they wanted to know about the Presidential election. The older kid, about 20, was a Ron Paul fan, but didn’t’ know much about Dr. Paul’s policies. When I said that I was a Libertarian, the kid was interested. But the dad pretty much told the kid to shut up, and get back to eating. They may have needed to leave, of course. Talked to people at two other tables for a few minutes, about issues and the presidential race. They appeared to believe that I was from Mars. In New Hampshire, candidates talk to folks in diners. in North Carolina, you don’t expect random political candidates to interrupt you while you eat KFC.

It was so beautiful that I stopped twice to talk to bikers by the side of the road, sitting at tables. Bikers were in an expansive mood, took my cards gladly. They may have been happy because of the hand-rolled cigarettes they were smoking. They certainly took good care of that tobacco, keeping it in little plastic bags. Drove kids from Raleigh Charter High School to Richmond Virginia, for a Quiz Bowl tournament. On the way up, stopped at a gas station near Norlina. I asked him if he had any favorites in the presidential race He stared at me, and suggested all politician should simply be killed. That’s not quite what he said, but that’s really close. I told him I was running for Governor, and he softened a bit. His real point was that anyone he would want to support, couldn’t get elected. So, he assumed that anyone who got elected didn’t deserve his support. I asked him if he was registered to vote, and he admitted that he was not. But then, given his theory of politics, that makes sense, I think.
