Michael Munger's Issues
Any Governor must face decisions on a variety of issues. The position of Governor in NC has traditionally been one of the weakest in the nation. In fact, the NC Governor was the last among all 50 states to obtain an effective veto power over legislation. That power was not obtained until 1996. However, things are different now. The Governor heads the North Carolina Council of State, a body that has important advisory power. When the veto power is added, and considering the unusual extent of appointment powers the Governor possesses, the NC Governor is actually one of the most powerful among all states, at least in terms of formal constitutional and statutory authorities. What is done with those great powers..., well, that's what this election will be about! Consequently, I have tried to lay out my positions on a many different issues, to give the votes a sense both of my views and the reasons I hold them. The appointment process is conducted in a way in which voters have little say. The key choice, then, is the vote for the Governor him/herself. Please give me your feedback, on the Munger Issues Direct email , on these or any other positions you are interested in. And thanks for caring about the issues in North Carolina! |
